Q
I do a lot of translation work and would like
to be able to enter double spaced text and "freeze" it so that I
could then type in the translation between the lines. If I could then save the
original and translation separately, it would be a bonus. At the moment I have
to use two windows and split the screen. Is there any program that will let me
do this?

I suspect there may be another, more elegant
method -- alternative suggestions welcome -- but you can achieve most of your
aims in Word by inserting Text Boxes between the double spaced lines. You will
find that option on the Insert menu. By default the box appears with a border
but you can make that disappear by displaying the Drawing Toolbar, highlight
the Text Box, select the Lines icon, click the More Lines button and in the
Line Color drop down menu select ‘No Line’.

Having replaced an Epson black ink cartridge
for a compatible cartridge every time I print something a pop-up window tells I
am using a non-Epson cartridge (yes I did know) and do I want to continue. Is
there any way of removing this irritating window?

It can be done but it involves replacing the
‘chip’ on the compatible cartridge with one from an original Epson cartridge
and using a chip ‘resetter’ to fool the printer into thinking it has been
fitted with a new cartridge. However, this trick only works on compatible
cartridges that use the same size chips and mounting pins as the original.

I get an error message when I log on which says
Error Motivedirectory, I close it and carry on which seems okay; can you tell
me what it is?

The Motivedirectory error message, which can
also appear as ‘Motivechorus’ and ‘Matcli’ is a data logger component, usually
installed as part of an HP printer package and some broadband services. It is
meant to help with error reporting and troubleshooting but it can cause
problems if it is corrupted or changes are made to a PCs network configuration.
You can try re-installing the printer or application it is associated with but
it’s easiest just to disable it. You should find a reference to the word Motive
in a Command line on the Startup list (type 'msconfig' in Run on the Start
menu), uncheck the item and reboot.

We are driven to distraction in this office by
annoying file copies, which appear at the top of any list of files in folders
in Microsoft Word. On opening a folder there first appears a host of files ‘
~WRL2733.tmp’. Is there a box I should ‘check’ somewhere to stop this process
of automatic file copying?

Not as far as I know. Word has a feature called
Auto Recover that automatically saves a copy of the document you are working on
at preset intervals in: C:\Documents and Settings\<yourname>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Word and this provides a useful safety net if there is a power
cut, or the PC or Word crashes. The temporary files that appear in the source
directory -- i.e. the folder where the document is saved -- are created whilst
you are working on a document and should be deleted when you close Word but for
various reasons some may get left behind and the only thing you can do is
delete them manually.

I run Windows XP Professional and use a HP
PSC1350 printer but I have had this problem prior to that. No matter how I
configure the properties of adding borders to documents or pictures in MS Word,
the bottom border fails to print or does just a faint squiggle. Is there a
magic technique please?

It sounds as though the bottom margin on your
page may be too narrow. Go to Page Setup on the File menu and experiment by
increasing the width of the bottom margin.

Recently I had my hard drive reformatted.
Although I have reinstalled the driver for the DVD drive, it will not recognise
DVD discs. I run Windows 98SE.

My guess is that you haven’t re-installed the
DVD player program that used to be on your PC or you are using an older version
of Windows Media Player. You can download Media Player version 9 for Windows 98

How can I get Microsoft Customer Services to
answer an email? I have been asking for
clarification on Anti-SpyWare, which I had previously downloaded. All I get is an automated reply saying they
will answer shortly. I do not wish to
make another expensive phone call to them.

Getting a reply from MS can be a bit hit and
miss, though usually someone will get back to you, eventually… AntiSpyware is still in its Beta testing
stage and Microsoft is being a bit cagey about it and to date have not been
very forthcoming on the finer points of its operation. If it’s a fairly
straightforward query you might find the answer in the MS AntiSpyware FAQ at: www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/
