RUGBY SPECIAL!

I find that www.planet-rugby.com is second to none in their provision of screensavers, boasting numerous different types for a variety of countries. These are also available through its sister site, www.rugby365.com.
Andrew Johnston

The SRU are promising a screensaver will be available on their revamped site at www.sru.org.uk.  For something a little more esoteric try www.vandals.freehosting.net

/inside.htm - an American Rugby Union club.  Or there's a screensaver from Cern Rugby Club (a Swiss Rugby Club) at http://cern.web.cern.ch/

CERN/Clubs/rugby/links.html.  For New Zealand, the Wellington Hurricanes offer a screensaver at www.hurricanes.co.nz/hscreen.html.  A souvenir screensaver of the 1999 World Cup can be found at www.wellingtonrugby.co.nz/screen.html.

Chris Franklin

For a fun screen saver try www.guinness-rugby.co.uk.

Keith Boniface

I found rugby screensavers at:
ftp://ftp.window98.com/pub/sw/

screen-saver/files/rugby.exe

http://www.fira-aer-rugby.com/eng/screen_saver.html
If you are a supporter of Wasps Rugby Club (Canada that is!) they have their own screensaver at: http://www.escape.ca/

~wasps/rugby.exe
Of course, if none of the above come up to scratch you could always design
your own, perhaps using some clipart from:
http://perso.wanadoo.fr

/rugby.metz/rugbycliparts/

For rugby photographs try www.webshots.com

I did a search for "Rugby Union Screen Saver" using www.google.com and found the following:

http://freespace.virgin.net

/keiren.kirk/projects.html

This will lead you to an unofficial Scottish Rugby Union Screen Saver.

Here's a good one: http://www.screensavershot.

You should find what you are looking for on one of these pages:

I don't know of a rugby screensaver, but I know a man who does! Go to the chat section of www.gwladrugby.com and post a question.  I guarantee that you will have several answers within hours.
Don Haines

Once again a quite incredible response. This is just a tiny fraction of the replies we received on behalf of Clare Singleton. Thanks to everyone who took the trouble to write in with suggestions.

IN SEARCH OF THE DRAGON

Some months ago, with a birthday looming, I took a newspaper cutting giving details of a new Mah Jongg game. It was suitable for both Mac and PC and had a number of 'patience' games included. Careless daughter lost the cutting and, of course, I did not keep a copy. Do you have any ideas?

John Battison

We’ve had mixed results with this one, there does appear to have been a PC/Mac game called Mah Jongg 3000 Pro, which was available as shareware but was withdrawn on the 1st September and will apparently be released as a commercial product in the near future, more details at: http://www.mah-jongg.com/. We managed to find several Windows only versions, try Mah Jongg Wall at: http://gamesdomain.telepac.pt

/directd/pc/win95/board/mjwr10.html. We couldn’t find any with Patience games included, are you sure you’re not confusing it with the solo/one-handed version of the game called ‘solitaire’? As usual any help from knowledgeable F!F!F! readers is very welcome.

FAVOURITE ALLSORTS

Could you advise if and how it is possible to resort the list of favourites in Internet Explorer 5 into alphabetical order.  This feature was easily available in earlier versions of IE.  Even resorting the basic Favourites file with Windows Explorer doesn't affect the way it is displayed by IE5.
J M Henderson

The trick is to call up the Favourites list from the Start menu, right-click and select Sort by Name from the menu that appears.

DATE FIX

An alternative means of locking a date on a Word document as required by D. J. Evans (F!F!F! 31st August), is to insert a "CreateDate" or "SaveDate" field rather than the current date field.  Several display formats are available using the "Options" button followed by "Add to field". I have a read-only letter template including the "SaveDate" field. For a new letter, I open this, compose the text and save.  The date when this is done is then a permanent part of the document (unless, of course, the document is resaved with the same name).
R. L. Sunley

Thanks for that useful tip

KEYBOARD QUICKIES

Boot Camp (August 31st) mentions a crib sheet for Word keyboard short cuts.  I found a very nice one for Outlook Express, in the Help window, under "Short Cut Keys", which prints out as a single sheet of A4.
Ann Woodhouse

Well spotted! There’s also one in Internet Explorer Help under the same heading, they’re both worth keeping handy for reference.

WILLFUL WORD

I have an annoying problem when typing the word 'on' in a letter or document. Word insists on changing it to 'in'. If I delete the i and replace it with an o, it sticks. It’s a nuisance having to check the whole document visually to ensure that all my ons are ons and not ins. Spell check obviously does not pick this up - in or on is OK by it.

John Butler

At some point you or someone else must have instructed Word to make the change. It’s easily done whilst spell checking long documents, absently-mindedly clicking Change or Add instead of the Ignore button. To stop it happening select AutoCorrect on the Tools menu and select the AutoCorrect tab, scroll down the list of words until you come to “on” in the Replace column, which will have “in” alongside in the Replace With column, highlight and click the Delete button.

MORE WORD WORRIES

I am having a problem with Microsoft Word.  Admittedly, it is not a problem of monumental calibre, but it has been annoying me for quite some time.  It is regarding the option of having the 'th' or 'st' in superscript after a number. I changed this on a previous version of Word, but have now sadly forgotten how I managed it. Modern etiquette dictates that the way my computer does it is outdated and passé and it is proving quite tedious to have to spend extra time changing it after completing a document.

Rob Brill

On the most recent versions of Word (97 & 2000) this option can be found on the Insert menu under AutoText, click AutoText, then select the “AutoFormat As you Type” tab and uncheck the item “Ordinals (1st) with superscript” then click OK.

WAKE UP CALL

Every now and again I find that the ringing of the phone switches on the computer. Is there any way of preventing this happening?  If I switch off at the mains, which are not easily accessible, how long will it take for the clock to cease working? I feel that this is wearing out the computer as I have to switch it off and reboot after switching on the printer in order for the printer to work.

Mave Preedy

“Wake up on ring” is one of your PC’s power management functions, it’s controlled by the BIOS (basic input output system) program, which configures the motherboard and hardware at boot up, before Windows is loaded. The precise method of accessing the BIOS program varies from make to make so it’s worth consulting any manuals you may have concerning your PC’s setup. We looked at this very topic in Boot Camp recently (133 and 134, July 20th & 27th)
